Riot police fire rubber bullets at Unisa student protesters in Durban

Durban - Riot police closed Stalwart Simelane Street in Durban as nearly 1 000 disgruntled Unisa students gathered in protest on Thursday.

Tensions boiled over earlier when Public Order Policing Unit officers fired rubber bullets and tear gas into the crowd.

Relative order has since been restored, with a Unisa representative addressing the group using a loud hailer.

The protest is understood to emanate from the closure of rural exam centres across the province as well as consternation around fees.

Two people were injured by rubber bullets and were treated by KwaZulu-Natal EMS paramedics.

Both were thought to be in a stable condition.
