Robber wounded after victim shoots back

Durban – One of three robbers who tried to overpower a man along Sydney Road in Durban, was shot in the stomach and critically injured on Friday morning.

A News24 source said when the victim was accosted by the three robbers, he pulled out his own firearm and fired at his attackers.

The other two suspects fled. It is believed a second attacker was also shot in the scuffle, but he managed to flee on foot.

EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie confirmed one man was treated for a gunshot wound in the abdomen.

"He was transported to King Edward Hospital for further medical assistance."

Provincial police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane confirmed the incident, saying a case of attempted robbery had been opened at Umbilo police station.

"The victim opened fire, wounding one suspect who was taken to hospital under police guard. He will face an attempted robbery charge once discharged from hospital."
