Roodepoort community awaits MEC school visit

Johannesburg - Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi is expected to meet residents of Davidsonville in Roodepoort on Monday to discuss their allegations of maladministration at Roodepoort Primary School.

"There is an agreement that on Monday the 13th, the MEC for education in Gauteng, Panyaza Lesufi, will come back to us, the community, in resolving three matters," community spokesperson Ronald Dyers said last week.

The first matter related to the appointment of three SA Democratic Teachers Union teachers. Residents claim due process was not followed. The second was alleged maladministration by the principal and the chairperson of the school governing body. The third matter related to the election of a new school governing body.

"The community will also interact with the MEC in terms of statements made by the department and the MEC himself in branding the community's grievances as being racist," Dyers said.

"As indeed, from the very beginning when the grievances were raised, we've indicated that it is not a racist issue at all. It's about the administration of the school and appointment of officials."

EWN reported that learning at the school was disrupted for two weeks in February as parents protested, demanding the removal of the principal. Lesufi visited the school and agreed to appoint an interim principal.
