Cape Town - If you think it's cold outside - perhaps even colder than normal even for this time of the year, you could be right.
Large parts of South Africa are caught in a cold snap as winter makes its presence felt and temperatures plummet.
The South African weather service predicted severe rain and localised flooding for parts of the Western Cape, from Cape Town across the western half of the province.
Across the East Cape interior, heavy winds were predicted as well as conditions that could see snowfalls from Graaff Reinet to Cradock.
Snow is also expected on the high-lying areas of the Western Cape, and around Sutherland in the Karoo.
Weekend temperatures
The weather is mainly the result of a strong cold front set to hit the country from the west and it will be accompanied by gale-force winds, said the Weather Service.
Despite the low temperatures, the service predicted a likelihood on dry conditions for veldt fires across the Free State, North West and the eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
Temperatures in Gauteng are not expected to top 20°C over the next four day forecast period and it will remains largely partly cloudy.
Weekend temperatures are expected to dip into the mid teens.
The Western Cape will be cold with a temperature high of 16°C on Saturday being the only stand-out in a rainy week and localised flooding in some areas is possible.
KwaZulu-Natal will be mild with temperatures in the early to mid 20s. However, heavy rain is expected on Thursday and Friday, but it will clear by the weekend.
Rainy weather creates a risk for motorists and traffic authorities have urged drivers to maintain longer following distances and drive safely.
Some roads may be blocked due to flooding and drivers should be aware that even low rainfall could result in slippery road conditions.
