SIU is slow - communications committee

Johannesburg - The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) is slow in its investigations, the portfolio committee on telecommunications and postal services said on Friday.

"The portfolio committee... is concerned about the slow pace of the investigations by the SIU into some entities of the department," chairperson Mmamoloka Kubayi said in a statement.

The committee received a report from SIU head Vasantrai Soni on progress in outstanding investigations into entities within the department, as proclaimed by the president.

Kubayi urged the SIU to urgently find speedy resolutions.

SIU spokesperson Boy Ndala said he could not comment on the matter as he had not seen the committee's comments.

I recently read this in the investigative newspaper on Fridays. Judge for yourself how effective the Seriously Impotent Unit is. In 2010 the SIU had begun investigating a building contractor Khotso Frank Khasu over a major contract with the Naledi municipality in the North West province for the building of 3000 low cost houses in Vryburg, The SIU found that only 4 houses had been buildt and that Khasu Engineering Services, which Khasu owns, billed the coumcil for millions of rands for earthworks, roads, stormwater structures, streetlights etc that were never buildt. On the purported grounds that the project was urgent no tender process was followed. Between June 2008 and September 2009,the council paid R27 million to Khasu Engineering and another R58 million into the personal accounts of Khasu.By May the following year all 3 accounts had been emptied. He was appointed the chief director of the Traditional Affairs and Co-Operative governance department in October 2013,with a minimum salary of R930 000.Gordhans new department. Up to today there was no prosecution,or asset freezes and no money paid back
