Samwu consultant fingered over missing millions

Johannesburg - A consultant for the SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) could face arrest on Monday in connection with the missing R136m from the union’s coffers.

According to the Sunday Independent, Samuel Phaswane, who was reportedly appointed by Samwu to manage its finances, has been ordered by police to present himself to them, along with his lawyer, by no later than Monday.

This follows a Hawks investigation into the missing money.

Speculation meanwhile is now rife that his arrest could be imminent.

Phaswane’s company, Mpuamba Solutions, allegedly manages Samwu’s finances at a cost of R400 000 a month.

This latest development comes after a faction within the union, calling itself Save Our Samwu (SOS) called for a probe and the suspension of its top leadership following claims of missing money.

This came after a draft financial audit found that huge amounts of money have potentially been lost.

At a special meeting earlier this year, union bosses refused to appoint forensic auditors despite five out of nine provinces asking for this.

Instead, union bosses started suspending those who called for the audit.

Samwu, which is the country’s biggest municipal union has 180 000 members and represents some of the lowest-paid government workers.
