Security tight ahead of Marikana commemoration

Rustenburg - Security was tight in Wonderkop outside Rustenburg, North West on Saturday ahead of the Marikana shooting commemoration.

Police were stationed at all ports of entry into the area searching cars.

A police water canon, several police vans, a fire engine and two ambulances were parked near the koppie in Nkaneng where three tents had been erected opposite a stage where the commemoration would take place.

A group of men dressed in yellow National Council of Trade Union (Nactu) T-shirts climbed the koppie singing trade union songs and wielding sticks.

Second year anniversary

A crowd of about 300 had already gathered by 10:00 to mark the second year anniversary of the Marikana shooting which resulted in the deaths of 34 striking Lonmin Platinum mineworkers.

The miners were shot dead in a clash with the police.

Ten other people including two police officers and two security guards were killed during the strike-related unrest in the preceding week.

Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema, Democratic Alliance parliamentary leader Mmusi Maimane and Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union leader Joseph Mathunjwa were expected to address the crowd.

It could not be confirmed on Friday whether any government officials would be attending the anniversary.

Last year, government was absent from the one-year commemoration.
