Johannesburg - Economic Freedom Fighters Limpopo coordinator Jossey Buthane appeared in court on a charge of assault on Thursday, police said.
Buthane allegedly hit a University of Limpopo student with a stick during a student gathering last week, Colonel Ronel Otto said.
He was released on bail and is expected back in the Mankweng Magistrate's Court on September 23 for the common assault case.
Comment was not immediately available from the EFF.
Buthane has faced two previous assault charges.
In February 2012 he was arrested for allegedly assaulting ANCYL member Herman Mabelebele at a rally, also at the university.
In September 2014, Buthane faced a charge of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
He allegedly beat fellow party member Rudzani Ntwampe at an EFF meeting in Mahwelereng township outside Mokopane, according to a report on Independent Online.
Information on whether these charges were withdrawn was not immediately available.
The EFF has been in the throes of campaigning for Student Representative Council elections. At Wits, seven students were suspended when an election debate went awry. Six are from the EFF.
On Thursday, the High Court in Johannesburg ruled that the suspension be lifted so that the students can continue with lectures, but the party's candidates cannot contest the SRC elections.
