Cape Town - Police investigating the murder of former Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa are still no closer to finding his killer and are accused of bungling the case from the outset.
According to the Sunday Times, a police source with knowledge of the investigation said: “There is still no progress in this case. It’s a mess.”
Meyiwa’s father, Sam Meyiwa, told the newspaper that he was concerned his son’s killer had not been caught. He said detectives had visited him at his home in Umlazi, near Durban, about two weeks ago and told him they did not want to make the same mistake twice and arrest the wrong person.
In addition to numerous blunders, there was no movement of the docket between 11 November last year and Tuesday last week. The newspaper reports that according to the police systems, the docket has remained dormant with a Major JC Sibiya.
Possibility Meyiwa knew his killer
This after Gauteng provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Lesetja Mothiba said on 18 December that the case was a priority and that police were certain of a breakthrough soon.
This comes after News24 reported in December that there was a possibility that Meyiwa knew his killer.
At the time, City Press reported that police were investigating those who were with Meyiwa on the evening he was killed. Three detectives involved or closely linked to the investigation said they suspected one of the people Meyiwa socialised with was likely his killer.
"I can assure you that a witness who was there during the shooting will soon be taken in for questioning and possibly be arrested thereafter," one of the detectives reportedly said.
Meyiwa was killed in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, while visiting his singer and actress girlfriend Kelly Khumalo last month. Two men allegedly entered the house on 26 October and demanded cellphones before shooting Meyiwa and running away.
In December, murder charges were withdrawn against Zanokuhle Mbatha, who had been arrested in connection with the case.
