IN SUMMARY: Seven people, including two alleged robbers, were injured in a shootout at a shopping centre in Bedfordview, east of Johannesburg, on Thursday, Gauteng police said.
"Three customers, two security guards and two suspects were injured during the shooting. All have been taken to hospital," said spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale.
Security guards were collecting cash inside the centre when they were confronted by a group of armed men, she said.
"A shooting ensued between them, with some customers caught in the crossfire. An undisclosed amount of money was taken by some of the suspects."
One person had been shot in the head, arm and abdomen while another was shot in the arm, said paramedics spokesperson Danielle Dooley.
One suspect was shot in the leg and tried to run away but was found in the basement area, said Dooley.
Another suspect had been shot in the chest and was found near the escalators.
An elderly woman was found hiding between clothing rails at a store. She had a heart condition and was experiencing chest pain. She was treated on scene and transported to hospital by for further medical treatment.
Police have warned shoppers to stay away from the shopping centre.
Johannesburg - Police are still searching for suspects in connection to a shooting at Bedford Centre which left seven people injured.
Police wouldn't confirm the number of suspects but witnesses told eNCA reporter Phakamile Hlubi they saw at least five suspects.
Shops in Bedford Centre are starting to re-open on Thursday afternoon following a robbery in which seven people were injured.
Bedfordview SAPS spokesperson Leiutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale told News24 that seven people were shot, including two suspects, two guards, and three customers in a robbery at Bedford Centre in Bedfordview.
A 9mm and an AK47 were found at the scene, she said.
"Security guards arrived at the mall to receive cash and were met by an unknown number of suspects," Mogale said.
He added that the guards were both shot in the leg and are in a stable condition.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann told News24 that the shooting happened at about 11:15, and paramedics received the call at about 11:30.
The people who were shot are in a serious to critical condition and have been taken to various hospitals, she added.

Steinman was unable to provide further details but pictures circulated on Twitter showed it happened at the Bedford Centre.
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza referred queries to Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale who could not be reached for comment.
Johannesburg emergency services spokesperson Nana Radebe referred queries to Ekurhuleni emergency services and metro police.
Ekurhuleni metro police spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago could not be reached for comment.
Ekurhuleni emergency services spokesperson Rogers Mamaila could also not be reached for comment.

A bloody scene unfolded at the Bedfordview shopping centre, east of Johannesburg on Thursday morning, according to Netwerk24.

An unknown number of bank robbers stormed the Standard Bank at the centre. The robbers were apparently confronted, resulting in a shoot-out.
The robbers apparently fled to Pick n Pay in the centre.
According to witnesses, the robbers continued to shoot as they moved round the centre. Reports have been received of several serious injuries. Ambulances and emergency vehicles are on the scene.
According to Netcare 911, five people have been injured, two of them critically.
"It's a dramatic scene. People have been shot all round the centre,” one of the emergency crew said.
One suspect has been arrested. Police are on the scene, and the shooting is continuing.
Bedfordview and Edenvale News reported that the shopping centre is in lockdown after cash-in-transit robbers were trapped inside. Witnesses reported hearing automatic gunfire, according to a journalist at the scene.
