Shoot-out in Kruger National park

Johannesburg - A policeman and a game ranger have been shot and killed in the Kruger National Park, police said on Sunday.

The policeman, accompanied by a soldier, was searching for rhino poachers in the park's southern Tshokwane section park at 09:00 on Saturday morning when they came under fire, police spokesperson Colonel Vishnu Naidoo said.

"The shooting resulted in the SAPS member being shot and killed. In return, the defence force member fatally wounded the shooter," said Naidoo.

"It emerged later that the shooter was in fact an on-duty SANParks game ranger."

An inquest docket was opened to determine the circumstances and cause of the incident.

Very sad IF it was a case of mistaken iddentity with both sides thinking the other were poachers.

Bring of the military, automatic weapons, helicopters. Hunt these people down. Such a sad lost of life, never mind the number of rhinos that have killed in the last three years. The government should declare a state of emergency regarding poaching – A SHOOT TO KILL POLICY springs to mind!!!. Closing and securing our boarders also sounds like a great idea as ever since the park has been opened into Mozambique rhino poaching has become a major problem. Global people are using Mozambique to rape our natural resource. 1000’s of sharks are being killed in Mozambique for their fins, this is a good indicator of the type of people operating there.

This is probably the most weiredest story i ever read, it shows the complex and highly profitable inner workings of the poaching industry. how do both the policeman and gameranger know that the where poachers present but failed to pass information to one another to co-ordinate the operation. both are paid by the poaching syndicates but are unaware of that fact.

Potential strategies for preserving rhinos: 1. Start rhino colonies in other parts of the world - rhinos on the prairies? It might even up their breeding level. Think of Tahrs - prolific on Table Mountain, nearly extinct in the Himalayas 2. Give Rhinos as exchange gifts to the Chinese - think pandas - and emphasize that Afro-Chinese trade agreements will survive and flourish only as long as the "symbolic" rhinos do! 3. "Sell" rhinos in advance to very rich Saudis etc. Make owning a rhino a status symbol of Serious Note. The new owner gets bragging rights and the horn once the rhino dies of old age (the older the rhino at time of death, the greater the bragging value). In return, they have the right to use their military to protect their personal rhino. As an incentive to breed the animals, the owners get the rights to sell or gift the rhino offspring (and their horns after death through old age) to other Incredibly Rich Status Conscious Mense who can afford to pay for effective rhino protection! With personalised microchips etc, poaching is likely to result in "permanent removal" of the poachers by the enraged owner. 4. Start the rumour that the real cure to impotence and various illnesses actually resides in the Chinese foreskin and toenails, respectively. There would be an endless market for toenail clippings and a rush on circumcision! 5. Start a rumour that powdered rhino horn is heavily diluted with Chinese toenail clippings (this is most probably true anyway).
