Shoppers beat up robber after attack at Cape Town mall

Cape Town - A lone robber was beaten up by shoppers after he allegedly stabbed and tried to rob a security guard of his gun on Tuesday at a Khayelitsha shopping mall in Cape Town.

The guard had been standing in front of a shop at the Nonkqubela Link Mall at 10:40 when the suspect accosted him, provincial police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk confirmed.

"The security [guard] was stabbed on both hands and on his lower lip by the suspect. During the struggle, two shots went off," Van Wyk said.

Shoppers then came to the guard’s assistance, giving the suspect a beating which landed him in hospital.

The suspect is under police guard, and the security officer has also received medical attention, Van Wyk confirmed.

A case of attempted robbery is under investigation.

"Police members retrieved the firearm and knife on the scene," he said.
