Johannesburg - Metro police fired rubber bullets at protesters who blocked roads in Orlando West, Soweto on Wednesday.
Spokesperson Edna Mamonyane said several hundred residents blocked Vilakazi and Khumalo Streets, as well as Klipspruit Valley Road with burning tyres and boulders in the morning.
"They were protesting against pre-paid [electricity] meters," she said.
"We had to negotiate with the protesters and then escorted them to Uncle Tom Hall, where they were addressed by officials from Eskom."
She said that after the meeting the residents went back to protesting.
"We then used rubber bullets [to try and disperse them]."
No injuries were reported and there were no arrests.
She said a small group was still protesting on Wednesday afternoon.
"We can confirm that Vilakazi and Klipspruit Valley have been re-opened. Khumalo is still being cleared. "
