Sisulu housing announcement insult to poor - EFF

Johannesburg - Human Settlements Minister Lindiwe Sisulu's announcement that people under the age of 40 will no longer receive free housing is an insult to the poor, the EFF said on Friday.

"This is clearly an insult to the poor. Above all, it is an indication that the ANC government does not care about poor people," the EFF said in a statement.

On Tuesday, Sisulu told media in Durban that anyone younger than 40 would not get a free house from the government.

She said the government's intention in giving free houses was to right the wrongs of the past and give people dignity. That group of people was not those below the age of 40.

"I don't know of a country that gives free houses to young people. Free housing in a few years will be something of the past. You [the young people] have lost nothing [to apartheid]," Sisulu said.

The EFF accused the government of trying to subject young people to homelessness.

"They are intending to subject a whole generation of black young people to homelessness since they fail to provide them with quality jobs and quality education," the party said.

"As long as there is no quality education and quality jobs, government must provide quality housing for the poor."
