Scores of students are expected to meet on the Stellenbosch campus today to spread the love following some, “negative publicity in the media”.
About 2400 people have indicated on Facebook that they will be attending.
The negative publicity refers to the documentary called Luister, which has gained a lot of traction on social media. It documents the experiences of black students at the university.
The page – created three days ago – initially stated that the group wanted to address the “not so lekke vibes on campus”, but has since been changed.
“Standing in a line at the Neelsie [student centre] to get my sandwich, I was reading yet another article about Stellenbosch and I just had enough. I just couldn’t take the constant pumping of negativity and I thought I would be the one to do something and bring some positivity to this nation,” said Nathan Swart about his idea to have the event.
The organisers have arranged a video camera where they will be giving a chance to those who want to, to come forward and say what they enjoy most about being at the university.
“Remember if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it.”
Anyone with a negative view will not be allowed to participate.
“Our sole purpose will be spread love and positivity on campus.”
The crux of the video, though, according to Swart, will be everyone gathered to sing the national anthem.
“You will see a nation standing together regardless of race and difficulties, singing our national anthem. I will probably be the most emotional person there.”
Entertainment has also been arranged for the event, which is scheduled to kick off at about 10am. At 1pm the Black Eyed Peas song Where Is The Love will be played.
