Student protests hit Durban

Durban - The situation at the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Edgewood campus has simmered down after students earlier on Thursday protested about management's alleged lack of concern for students.

Some issues that were read out by Student Representative Council members included lack of safety at residences, lack of study guides, student discrimination and fee structure concerns.

Students also voiced frustration at management who are "not accessible".

Police presence was still high and some damage to property has been reported. Some students were also seen arming themselves with stones.

A News24 journalist on scene was threatened with violence for attempting to take photographs.

Elsewhere in Durban, close to 1 000 Unisa students also took to the streets, leading to members of the Public Order Police firing rubber bullets and teargas into the crowd.

Two people were injured, and treated by paramedics. Both were in a stable condition.

By Thursday afternoon, relative order has been restored, with a Unisa representative addressing the crowd.

The protest stemmed from unhappiness with the closure of rural exam centres across the province, as well as disputes about fees.
