Task team appointed to resolve Limpopo water problems

Johannesburg - Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane has appointed a task team to resolve water problems around Giyani in Limpopo, her office said on Friday.

"The minister appointed a designated project manager through [the] Lepelle Water Board to take over all water-related matters and the delivery thereof," spokesperson Brenda Mpitsang said in a statement.

"She gave the task team until the end of September 2014 to ensure that the affected communities have access to quality water."

Mokonyane had addressed the Greater Giyani municipality community, where Deputy Water and Sanitation Minister Pam Tshwete, Co-operative Governance MEC Makoma Makhurupetja, and the Mopani district municipality Mayor Nkakareng Rakgoale were also in attendance.

"It cannot be that people have access to clean water in affluent suburbs while the people of Mopani don't enjoy the same rights. You are equal citizens of this country and you have the right to access water as any other South African," Mokonyane told the community.

Mpitsang said Mokonyane told residents that civil servants were giving her misleading progress reports about the state of water in Mopani district.

"Minister Mokonyane said between August and September her department would audit all water resources, including boreholes, with a view to improving and upgrading them to ensure sustainable water provision."

In addition, the minister said the community needed to take ownership of the water infrastructure by safeguarding it to prevent theft and vandalism.

Not saying that people in Mopani should get water. However to compare them to "people in affluent suburbs" who pay rates and taxes as well as pay for their water isnt fair either. Water is a right but if it comes out of a tap in your home it's going to cost you.

But some are more equal than others. Some have to pay for the water. This is further the sequence in Afrika: 1. Receive infrastructure. 2. Do not upkeep infrastructure. Infrastructure deteriorates. Riots. Lots of property destroyed. 3. Task team/commission gets appointed. Lots of eating, traveling, reveling and wasting money. 4. Task team then gives a report that states the obvious. 5. Work is then given to tentrepeneur amids fraud etc. Project costs 5 times more. 6. Work is of sub standard or nothing is done. 7. Riots ensue and millions more destroyed even deaths. 8. Everything goes to pieces and stays that way-Zimbabwe. 9. Colonialism/Apartheid/White man gets blamed. 10. White man sends food to feed Afrikan beggar. 11. Colonialism/Apartheid/White man still gets blamed. True story.

The simple truth is all the ANC had to do was keep the expertise gained by the previous Govt. But NO they know better and have given jobs to unqualified individuals who couldn't look after a cup of water never mind a supply to towns...The deterioration of infrastructure is now really beginning to move at a fast pace and will only get worse with time... Setting up task teams will only tell us the obvious which even the deaf and blind could work out...

Why do you need to appoint a team. This is anc jargon for "we are looking for someone else to blame". This is what happens when nepotism and corruption is allowed by government.

20 years later and it's still not thier fault. Well if you want to vote for rubbish don't cry when you get rubbish.

A Minister who needs a task team to sort out any problem either doesn't have capable people working for her or lack the brains to do her job as it should be done.

We dont need a task team to look what is the problem, we want a team to install the piping & pumps. Use the money for the task team to buy the material. Get the comunity to assist with the labor to install every pipe. Then they will take ownership of it.
