"According to a report from one of the drivers, one truck was parked in the breakdown lane when another truck rear-ended it, the driver then veered across the road and collided with the Armco barriers between the north and southbound lanes," said Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha.

The fuel from the trucks spread across the road after the collision, which happened at around 04:00.

"Fortunately, both drivers managed to escape from the trucks with no injuries," said Botha.

He said firemen battled the blaze and managed to extinguish it just after 05:00.

Eyewitness Peter Avis who spoke to News24 while the fire was still ablaze, described the flames as being massive.

"The flames were so high that they are covering the bridge, which is approximately 150 metres high," Avis said.

"A train which was coming along the bridge had to brake for fear of catching alight," he said.

The highway remained closed to traffic.
