Thief held after shoot-out with cops

Johannesburg - A man was arrested for house robbery after a shoot-out with police in Marlboro, Johannesburg police said on Thursday.

"Four suspects robbed a household in Atholl and were spotted by the police as they were trying to get away," police spokesperson Moses Maphakela said.

"They shot at police who returned fire. The getaway car, a Volvo, came to a standstill after police shot at one of its tyres."

Three of the men ran away. The fourth man, 28, was arrested.

Maphakela said the men allegedly tied up people in the house around 08:00 and took household goods.

"Police recovered two flat screen television sets, kitchen cutlery, clothes, jewellery, cameras, and alcohol in the car," Maphakela said.

Police found gloves and balaclavas in the getaway car. The arrested man was expected to appear in court soon on charges of house robbery and possession of stolen goods.

Police were searching for his accomplices.
