Durban – The body of a third baby this year has been discovered floating in a river in KwaMashu C-section, Durban.
The discovery prompted a DA councillor in KwaMashu to appeal to expectant mothers in the community to get help instead of dumping their newborn babies.
Councillor Emmanuel Mhlongo said he was called to the corner of Queen Nandi Drive and Malandela Road in ward 40 at around 13:00.
Mhlongo said members of the community called him to say they had discovered what looked like human remains in the river.
“I rushed to the scene and found the police and the community gathered at the scene. One of the community members said they earlier saw a man get out of a black Golf and throw a plastic bag into the river and drive off.”
Mhlongo said this was the third time that newborn remains had been found in the river this year.
“We encourage women in our community to get help instead of throwing the babies away. People should not kill their babies; there are support groups and adoption centres that will take care of the children,” said Mhlongo.
