Johannesburg - Three people were arrested at Menlyn Park shopping centre in Pretoria on Monday following a shoot-out with police, Gauteng police said.
"At 12:15 on Monday afternoon, Garsfontein police spotted a suspicious silver Audi A4 with three occupants near the Woodlands Boulevard shopping centre," spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said.
Weilbach said the police followed the vehicle and indicated to them to pull over in Atterbury Road in Menlyn. One occupant pointed a firearm at police and the police responded by firing a shot at the suspects' vehicle.
The three tried to flee in the Audi with police giving chase. They came to a stop inside one of the undercover parking areas at Menlyn Park, where they exited the car and sought to flee on foot.
"The police arrested all three suspects with the assistance of the police chopper and back-up vehicles," Weilbach said.
"One of the suspects received medical treatment on the scene for a gun shot wound he had sustained to one of his legs during the chase. He was taken to a local hospital, where he remains in custody under police guard. No one else was injured during the incident."
Two unlicensed firearms were confiscated on the scene. The Audi was apparently stolen earlier this month.
The three, in their 20s, were from Alexandra, Johannesburg. They would appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court soon for being in possession of a stolen vehicle and illegal firearms.
"The police investigation is ongoing to establish whether the suspects can be linked to other crimes," she said.
