Johannesburg - A 19-year-old woman whose young son was found wandering on the N1 in April has been sent for mental observation, Gauteng traffic police said on Tuesday.
She appeared in the Vereeniging Magistrate's Court.
"The court has referred her to Sterkfontein so that her mental state can be checked," said spokesperson Busaphi Nxumalo, referring to a facility outside Krugersdorp.
The woman was arrested on the night of 5 April, two days after her 16-month-old boy narrowly escaped being hit by a truck while walking along the N1 highway near the Grasmere off-ramp.
She was found guilty of attempted murder and child abandonment.
The case was postponed to 2 December.
