Top advocates not on lawyers' roll - report

Johannesburg - Many prominent advocates do not appear on the justice department's lawyers' roll, Beeld newspaper reported on Wednesday.

A search by the Afrikaans daily revealed that the names of lawyers, such as Jeremy Gauntlett SC, Barry Roux SC, Johann Engelbrecht SC, and Paul Fick SC, did not appear on the roll of appointed advocates.

Beeld said apparently the justice department had been battling for the past 19 years to get all the lawyers' names reflected accurately on the roll.

This was because it was destroyed in 1996 when the department's IT system crashed.

Before the electronic roll, the names were kept in a book but the book had also disappeared.

Lawyers had been asked to resend their names and admission certificates to the department but this process had not been completed.

Justice department spokesperson advocate Mthunzi Mhaga - whose name was not on the roll either - told Beeld the department was auditing the roll.

19 years to update a list!! Pathetic!!! The person(s) responsible need to be fired for just being plain useless, and the various managers above him/her all need firing too, same reason.

Can you believe it? This is the anc government in operation. Nothing is happening. One word “Pathetic”. Why do I write the anc in small letters? They are the smallest of all the parties as productivity is concerned.

Now anyone can be an advocate.

How many advocates are there in SA? I'm sure it would take less than a week to capture their names and credentials on a list, and yet even this simple task cannot be completed!

Interesting timing: a system crash in 1996...what could have changed?

Why not just ask the Bar Association and Law Societies to send their lists and get a legal typist. Should be done in a couple of days!!!!

Leaves a gap for fake advocates and lawyers to sneak in and practice wonder how many other departments are in the same situation?? Actualy scary to think about it. But when it comes to squandering millions apon millions on non important things as parties fancy cars branded suits finest wines/whiskey etc etc then theres abandunce of cash eagerly awaiting for this how many "trillions" is this system that crashed thats so important in the justice system cycle that for so many years has not been sorted?????????????
