Tracking device helps cops nail suspected robbers

Cape Town - A tracking device helped police arrest two suspected burglars in the early hours of Wednesday morning, when the rented car they were driving was cornered in Goodwood.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel André Traut in a statement said Flying Squad members were alerted to a hired silver Polo spotted at numerous burglaries in the Western Cape.

"The vehicle was fitted with a tracking system, and with the help of the tracking company the whereabouts of the vehicle could be communicated to police," he explained.

The vehicle was traced to the Parklands area shortly after 05:00, Traut said.

"With this information, the two Flying Squad members proceeded to the N7 freeway towards Table View. En route the members were informed that the vehicle was on the move again towards Goodwood and the [officers] observed the vehicle on the bridge opposite Grand West Casino."

The policemen approached the vehicle and managed to apprehend the two suspects.

"Inside the vehicle the members noticed a large quantity of linen which was traced to a business in Table View. It was established that the business had been burgled shortly before [the arrest].

"Further investigation will be done to determine how many other cases the suspects or vehicle could be linked to."

The suspects would remain behind bars until their court appearance later this week.
