Durban - Two men have been arrested in connection with the murder of a KwaZulu-Natal taxi owner, and for wounding his wife, police said on Monday.
Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the two men were expected to appear in the Camperdown Magistrate’s Court later on Monday.
Zwane said police seized a 9mm handgun and an R5 assault rifle with ammunition.
Phumezweni Joseph Masikane, 70, and his 55-year old wife were sleeping in their house in Kingfisher Avenue in Lynfield Park, south of Pietermaritzburg, on Friday night when two men entered their house shortly after 22:00.
The two demanded cash from Masikane and his wife, before fatally shooting Masikane and wounding his wife. She is recovering in hospital.
Zwane said the two men fled, but one of them was arrested in his getaway car in the area and the 9mm was retrieved from the car.
The second suspect was arrested during the weekend in Pietermaritzburg’s Northdale suburb and police are still on the hunt for a third suspect, believed to be the mastermind behind the attack.
Both weapons will be sent for ballistic testing. Zwane said it was believed that the 9mm was used to shoot the Masikanes.
