Two arrested for public violence in PE

Port Elizabeth - Two people have been arrested for public violence following a day of protest which left three people injured and six vehicles damaged in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape police said on Monday.

The pair, aged 19 and 21, would appear in the Gelvandale Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, spokesperson Brigadier Miranda Mills said.

Police were maintaining a heavy presence in the city's Northern Areas.

Residents began protesting in the early hours of Monday morning because of a shortage of teachers at the schools in the area.

Roads were blocked, cars were stoned and a Daily Sun journalist was hit over the head and robbed during the violent protest.

Police fired live ammunition, rubber bullets and teargas to disperse the crowd.

Mills said three people sustained minor injuries.

Five police vehicles and one private car were damaged during the protest, she said.

A number of people attempted to loot from a shop in West End, but police arrived before it could happen.

"Police visibility will be maintained, although the situation is currently calm," Mills said.
