King William's Town - Two men were arrested after they allegedly robbed a shop in Centane, near Butterworth on Sunday morning, Eastern Cape police said.
Captain Jackson Manatha said the two, allegedly armed with a rifle and a dagger, went into a local shop and demanded money.
"The 23 year old shop owner handed an undisclosed amount of money to the suspects. The suspects further... [stole] tobacco, airtime and [a] cellphone. It is believed that the community was alerted about the robbery and they contacted Centane police," Manatha said.
"Both police and the community chased the suspects. Both suspects were arrested and the rifle was recovered including tobacco, airtime and [a] cellphone."
An alleged getaway car was found nearby. Police were determining whether the car was stolen and whether the rifle was used in other crimes.
The men, aged 36 and 38, would appear in the Centane Magistrate's Court soon.
