Two boys drown while cooling off from heatwave

Polokwane - The heatwave sweeping across some parts of the country has indirectly led to the deaths of two young boys in Limpopo.

The boys, aged 6 and 8, were with five other youngsters from their area when they decided to jump into a dam in Mashishimale, Phalaborwa to cool themselves down, said Constable Lucy Sekgotodi.

The incident ended in a tragedy when the two experienced difficulty while trying to swim in the dam. They drowned, said Sekgotodi.

Their lifeless bodies were recovered by community members who were alerted to the incident.

Sekgotodi issued a plea to parents to ensure that their children are always supervised around pools and dams, especially because children were home for the school holidays and they tried to find ways to cool down.

According to WeatherSA, Phalaborwa's temperature would soar to around 40°C on Thursday.
