Two held for rape in Eastern Cape

Johannesburg - Two men have been arrested for allegedly raping a 20-year-old woman in Dutywa at the weekend, Eastern Cape police said on Monday.

The two, aged 18 and 27, were arrested on Saturday night, Captain Jackson Manatha said.

A group of five men approached the woman and her boyfriend who were walking in Dutywa town around 23:00 on Saturday. The men demanded money and cellphones from the couple.

"When they could not get anything, the boyfriend was severely beaten by the suspects and he ran [away] leaving his girlfriend behind," Manatha said.

He then spotted a patrolling police car and alerted officers to the attack.

"The second suspect was found still busy raping the woman whilst the first suspect who raped the woman was still at the scene," Manatha said.

The men would appear on Monday on rape charges.
