Two killed in Jeppestown for money theft

Johannesburg - Two men were shot and killed in Jeppestown on Saturday morning by a man who accused them of stealing from him, Gauteng police said.

"It is alleged that a man walked into a flat in Jeppe, he accused two men of stealing his money and then shot both the men," spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini said.

The men died on the scene. The shooter is still at large, he said.

Dlamini said eye-witnesses confirmed that the man looked familiar and that a manhunt was under way.

The shooting took place on Saturday morning before noon. Both men were South Africans.

Dlamini could not confirm or deny that the men lived in the Wolhuter Men's hostel along Jules street in Jeppestown, but said the building where the incident took place was in the same street.

Violence in the area began on Thursday when residents of the hostel and other buildings in the area had gathered along Jules street stoning passing cars and threatening to loot foreign-owned businesses in the area.

A number of panel beating businesses near the hostel closed their workshop and towed their cars to safer areas, while police monitored the situation. Police continue to monitor the area, Dlamini says.

Twelve people were arrested Jeppestown on Thursday for trying to loot foreign-owned shops.
