Johannesburg - Two people were killed and 17 others were injured on Friday when the two vehicles they were travelling in collided head-on on the N3 near Cato Ridge in KwaZulu-Natal, paramedics said.
"The minibus was travelling towards Pietermaritzburg, when it left the roadway, crossed the centre median and collided head-on with a vehicle travelling towards Durban," Netcare 911 Santi Steinmann said.
A man and woman who were travelling in the vehicle succumbed to their injuries and were declared dead on the scene.
"Two children travelling in the same vehicle sustained injuries and were transported to hospital for further medical care, after receiving treatment on scene," she said.
Fifteen occupants of the minibus sustained moderate to critical injuries.
They were transported to nearby hospitals for further care.
The cause of the accident was unclear.
