UFS students raise funds for 2016 fees

Bloemfontein – The University of the Free State’s (UFS) student representative council (SRC) members launched a fundraising campaign on Friday for students who cannot afford tuition fees.

“Other than protesting and shutting down the campuses, marching and sending memorandums, we have a responsibility to help out where we can. Even though we called for the zero percent increment, which we won, students still can’t afford to pay for fees and books," SRC president Lindokuhle Ntuli said.

Ntuli challenged students, staff members and the community to contribute.

Each SRC member pledged R500 from their own pockets towards the campaign, while some students also pledged to help students who could not afford fees.

Second-year law student Natasha Kabaso, 22, said she wanted to support the "less fortunate".

"This is something I feel strongly about. I am an international student so I know how hefty the fees can get," she said.

Violent Maluleka, 22, who studies genetics and microbiology, said this was her opportunity to make a difference.

"I believe I have an ability to make a difference. We have been asking for help from the university and the Department of Education in the past week during the #FeesMustFall campaign, but I believe we also need to contribute."

Students nationwide secured a no fee increase last week after days of countrywide protests.
