UKZN, students reach agreement

Durban – After almost a month of arrests and property destruction, protest action at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) seems to have stabilised.

On Tuesday, university spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka said ongoing consultation between university management and student leadership had led to consensus being "reached on all of the concerns raised by students" in their memorandum to university management.

"The parties have agreed that all of the short-term matters raised will be addressed immediately and that there will be ongoing consultation on all long-term matters raised.

"Student leadership agreed to communicate the consensus reached to the rest of the student body by the end of yesterday [Monday]. It is hoped this will ensure that there will be no more disruption to academic activities."

The university has experienced numerous disruptions in recent weeks, with students unhappy over several university policies.

Protesters caused damage to property and several students were injured after clashes with police and security officials.
