US teen presumed drowned in Transkei

Johannesburg – A US teenager is missing and presumed drowned in the Transkei, the National Sea Rescue Institute said on Monday.

The 19-year-old student at the University of Cape Town went missing while swimming with friends at a resort south-west of Coffee Bay around 23:00 on Sunday, the NSRI said in a statement.

He got into difficulty at low tide in the current spring tide in the surf.

The police search and rescue and dive teams, and Eastern Cape emergency services arrived at the scene around 10:00 on Monday due to its remote location.

The Air Force, NSRI and local private aircraft owners could not conduct a search by air due to bad weather.

The teenager’s family had been informed and the US Consulate had sent officials to the site to help.

The search would continue on Tuesday.
