Uncertainty over Louka court matter

Johannesburg - It was not clear on Sunday whether the sickly George Louka, accused of killing Teazers boss Lolly Jackson, would appear in court as scheduled on Monday.

Louka, who was extradited from Cyprus to South Africa, was supposed to appear in the South Gauteng High Court, sitting in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court, but is reported to be terminally ill.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Velekhaya Mghobozi told News24 that if Louka did not appear in court on Monday he would need to present a medical certificate.

Last week on Friday, the department of justice and correctional services said it would file a court application requesting alternative placement for Louka due to his terminal illness.

Spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga said in a statement the department would apply to court and present Louka's medical condition for a possible alternative placement.

The date of the court application was not disclosed.

"He is not a sentenced inmate and his situation is made unique by the fact that he is a foreign national who has a pending case against him."

Mhaga said the NPA's involvement in the case was critical but that the final decision would be made by the court.

According to reports, Louka has been diagnosed with inoperable stage four lung cancer and has been hospitalised with severe breathing problems.

His lawyer Owen Blumberg earlier told eNCA that he was going to approach the courts to have his client released from the Kgosi Mampuru II prison if co-operation was not forthcoming from correctional service authorities so that Louka could spend his last days with his family.
