Van Breda daughter critical but stable

Cape Town - A 16-year-old girl whose family members were attacked on a golf estate in Stellenbosch is in a critical but stable condition, News24 was told on Wednesday.

The headmistress of Somerset College, Meg Fargher, said Marli van Breda, a Grade 11 pupil at the school, underwent surgery on Tuesday evening after she was seriously injured in the attack on her family.

Vergelegen Mediclinic confirmed to Netwerk24 on Wednesday morning that she remained critical but stable.

The bodies of Martin van Breda, 54, his wife Teresa, 54, and their son Rudi, 22 were found in their De Zalze Golf Estate home on Tuesday morning. It is believed they were attacked with an axe.

Emergency medical services spokesperson Robert Daniels told the Cape Times Marli suffered a severe head trauma and a severed jugular.

Marli’s boyfriend, also a Somerset College pupil, was not present at school on Wednesday.

“She’s a lovely, popular, clever girl,” said Fargher about Marli who started at Somerset College last year.

The Van Breda parents were very involved at the school and are very supportive of the other pupils.

Fargher said the school had psychologists on hand who were ready to provide counselling for any students who needed it.
