Polokwane - Violence erupted at Anglo Platinum’s Twickenham mine in Limpopo on Friday during a protest by residents against alleged negligence by the mine in relocating graves.
They closed the road from Ditwebeleng village in Sekhukhune to the mine shaft, burning tyres and electricity poles, and demanding that mine management deal with their concerns.
Community leader Edward Phasha said residents were concerned that after the graves were relocated in 2001, the names on some of the tombstones were spelt incorrectly.
“When the mine came here, they sought approval from us to relocate our... graves, and we agreed. After they promised to relocate, they did it, but the names on the tombs are not that of our dead,” Phasha claimed.
He said the new cemetery did not have an access road.
"Residents also complained that they are not considered for job opportunities in the mine."
Mecklenburg police spokesperson Elias Setati confirmed there had been a protest, but could not immediately confirm the extent of the damage.
