Warning against vandalising flood signage

Johannesburg - People who vandalise or remove road signs associated with flood warnings will be arrested, the Nelson Mandela Bay metro warned on Wednesday ahead of expected floods in the area.

"A case of damage to property will be laid at the nearest police station," safety and security standing committee chairperson Thembinkosi Mafana said in a statement.

This followed a warning by the SA Weather Service of possible flooding in the area due to moderate to heavy downpours expected from Tuesday, until early Wednesday morning.

Several signs and facilities had been vandalised in the area recently.

"Our locks were cut in the dip area of Third Avenue, Newton Park yesterday [Monday] afternoon at both the boom gates," said Mafana.

The removal of barriers had also caused the closure of roads in the area.

"The barriers in Main Road, Kleinskool, in the vicinity of the Govan Mbeki Fire Station, were also moved on several occasions but our officials went back to replace it," said Mafana.

"These two roads are still closed at this time and we request motorists not to use it even if the barriers are not in place until our officials advise them otherwise."
