Cape Town - Nine tons of dagga was uncovered in Beaufort-West in the Western Cape at the weekend after traffic officials caught a whiff of weed emanating from a truck.
“The truck was pulled off for normal weighing and they got the smell of dagga. Our officials got suspicious and alerted police,” provincial traffic chief Kenny Africa told News24.
Police officers then pulled the truck off the N1 on Sunday afternoon and arrested the driver.
“In the truck they confiscated a huge amount of dagga. I think it was nine tons of dagga with a street value of R3.8m.
"These are drugs that will not land in our children’s hands in the Western Cape.”
The man was set to appear in court soon.
Africa said that road was one of a few provincial routes infamous for drug smuggling as it connected to other provinces.
Between 2011 and May 2015, provincial traffic authorities had confiscated various drugs from random vehicles searches with a total street value of R88m.
