Woman appears for trying to help prisoners escape

Johannesburg - A woman accused of smuggling a gun into court to help two prisoners escape had her case postponed in the Mthatha Magistrate's Court on Monday, Eastern Cape police said.

"The case was postponed to 27 February for the [Eastern Cape] High Court in Mthatha," police spokesperson Mzukisi Fatyela said.

Aviziwe Bila, 27, allegedly put a loaded gun into a dustbin at the magistrate's court in September.

The two prisoners were shot dead when one of them retrieved the gun from the dustbin and began shooting in a bid to escape.

During the gunfight one of the escapees disarmed a correctional services official.

His colleague was shot in the leg.
