Johannesburg – A woman sustained severe head injuries when she fell from the second floor of a Johannesburg mall on Monday afternoon. She was in a critical condition.
While paramedics had earlier reported that the woman had tripped while running away from a shooting near a store in the Mall of the South, they later issued a statement saying the two incidents were not directly related.
ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said, "[The incidents] occurred roughly at the same time but were not directly related as initially reported."
Police said three armed men held up staff at the Browns jewellery store in the mall at gunpoint around 14:00. As they fled with thousands of rands in jewellery, they randomly fired shots, Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.
Nobody was hit by the bullets. Meiring said the woman was taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in a critical condition.
The Glenvista Community Policing Forum said on its Facebook page the men fled in a green Hyundai Tucson, licence plate TVZ 287 GP.
