Woman dies as car rips open in Cape Town crash

Cape Town – A car travelling along the R300 highway in Cape Town ripped open on Saturday morning after apparently driving into a bridge, killing a passenger.

Western Cape police confirmed a man was arrested on an alcohol consumption charge.

According to paramedics, the woman was found lying a few metres away from the wreckage shortly before 07:00.

“Unfortunately there was nothing that they could do for her and she was declared dead on the scene,” said ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak.

“A man, believed to be the driver of the vehicle, was found walking around on scene. He was assessed by paramedics and treated for cuts and bruises. He was later transported to a nearby hospital for further medical treatment.”

He said the cause of the accident, which occurred between the Van Riebeeck off-ramp and the Stellenbosch arterial, was not yet known.

The city’s traffic services spokesperson Richard Coleman said the ages of the passenger and driver were 22 and 29 respectively.

Western Cape police spokesperson Lt Col Andre Traut said the man was arrested for “driving his vehicle under the influence of alcohol”.

“A culpable homicide case docket is also under investigation”.
