Yengeni appears on drunken driving charges

Cape Town - ANC NEC member Tony Yengeni has made further representations in terms of a plea agreement regarding his drunken driving case, the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court heard on Monday.

His lawyer Sylvester Vogel told the court they had written to the director of public prosecutions in terms of section 105A of the Criminal Procedure Act.

This section dictates that an accused can enter into a plea agreement with a prosecutor who has been authorised to do so by the national director of public prosecutions.

Yengeni’s letter was submitted on May 18.

The party’s national executive committee member, who is out on R500 bail, appeared relaxed in the dock and took off the cap he has worn at nearly all his appearances.

He was asked to return to court on June 30.

Yengeni was arrested in August 2013 after he was stopped for allegedly driving his Maserati erratically in central Cape Town.

He apparently had a blood-alcohol level of 0,25%, five times the legal limit of 0,05%.
