Zuma appoints woman as police chief

Cape Town - President Jacob Zuma on Tuesday appointed Mangwashi Victoria Phiyega as the new national police commissioner.

Phiyega, who is currently the chairperson of the presidential review committee on state owned enterprises and the deputy chairperson of the independent commission on the remuneration of office bearers, takes over from acting police commisioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

Mkhwanazi had held the role while former police boss Bheki Cele was suspended. Cele was fired by Zuma on Tuesday.
