Cape Town - President Jacob Zuma on Thursday congratulated newly elected Mauritius Prime Minister Anerood Jugnauth, who assumed office at the weekend.
In a statement issued by South Africa's international relations and co-operation department, Zuma also congratulated Mauritians on conducting what he called peaceful, credible, free, and fair elections.
"The successful elections in Mauritius attest to the stability and strength of democracy in this southern African country."
He said South Africa and Mauritius enjoyed strong, warm and fraternal relations characterised by regular and increasing interaction at all levels.
Jugnauth, aged 84, has previously served as president and prime minister of the Indian Ocean island state.
