Durban – ANC structures have received instructions from Luthuli House not to speak about affairs plaguing the SA Broadcasting Corporation, ANCYL KwaZulu-Natal provincial secretary Thanduxolo Sabelo said on Wednesday.
Sabelo was speaking at a press briefing at the ANC's provincial offices in Durban where they had planned to address the latest developments at the state broadcaster together with the Communication Workers Union (CWU).
He apologised to the media saying the Youth League had to recuse itself from the press briefing because the party had instructed it not to speak about the matter.
"We planned this briefing and [a] picket at the SABC with CWU two weeks ago. Yesterday [Tuesday] the National Working Committee of the ANC met in Luthuli House and issued a statement with instructions to all its structures.
"Among the instructions that were issued was that all structures of the ANC may no longer comment on the matter regarding the SABC, we are disciplined members of the ANC, we respect higher bodies of the ANC," said Sabelo.
Taking ruling to court
The youth league was expected to join the CWU at a picket outside the provincial SABC offices in Durban on Thursday in support of SABC chief operating officer, Hlaudi Motsoeneng.
The Independent Communications Authority of SA (Icasa) ruled on Monday that the SABC must withdraw its resolution to ban the broadcasting of violent protests, following a public hearing into the broadcaster's decision held in June.
Motsoeneng said on Monday the broadcaster would take its fight against the ruling to the highest court in the land.
Icasa spokesperson Paseka Maleka told News24 on Tuesday that they would not be commenting on the SABC's response until the broadcaster submitted its written reply to the Complaints Compliance Committee.
The SABC was given seven days to reply to Icasa's ruling.
