Johannesburg – At least 20 kids, aged between 6 and 9, were injured when a bakkie overturned and rolled down a steep road in Inanda, near Durban, on Friday afternoon, paramedics said.
Crisis Medical spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said the 20 children sustained minor to moderate injuries.
“Crisis Medical paramedics, with other emergency services, arrived on the scene shortly after 16:30 to find absolute mayhem as injured children lay spread out all over the road.”
KwaZulu-Natal emergency services said on Twitter that 23 children were injured.
Van Reenen said reports from the scene suggest the children were thrown from the bakkie when the driver lost control.
He said the driver suffered serious injuries and is in a critical condition.
“The children were triaged and treated on scene before being taken by ambulances to various nearby medical facilities for further treatment,” he said.
