Cape Town – Judgment in the bail applications of the two men accused of raping and killing teenager Sinoxolo Mafevuka is expected to be handed down in the Khayelitsha Magistrate's Court on Friday.
The two, aged 22 and 26, are cousins of her boyfriend. Before she died they apparently confronted her about leaving a bar with another man.
Arguing against their getting bail at an earlier hearing, prosecutor Ndakhele Mlungwana said a witness allegedly saw the two accused carrying a screaming woman towards the communal toilets in Khayelitsha Town Two before her murder in the early hours of March 2.
The 19-year-old was strangled. Her naked body was found slumped over a toilet. Her clothes had been stuffed into the cistern. Water from the leaking toilet is believed to have washed DNA evidence away.
The pair’s lawyer, Thabo Nogemane, said the State's evidence against his clients was of such poor quality that no court could accept it, and that police should start looking for “the real perpetrators who are still at large".
The magistrate has ordered that the cousins not be named.
