Bishops rugby coach still in intensive care after being stabbed in robbery

Cape Town - Richard Smith, the first team rugby coach of Bishops Diocesan College, is still in the intensive care unit of the Life Vincent Pallotti Hospital in Cape Town, after burglars stabbed him in the back of his head with a screwdriver.

The burglars broke into his house in Claremont last Tuesday at 02:30, attacked him and tied him up. His wife, Nina, who was sleeping in the baby's room, was also tied up when she went to investigate what was causing the noise in their bedroom, Netwerk24 reported.

Smith’s sister, Debi Greybe, says his condition remains unchanged.

She said the family was still in shock.

The family was receiving support from across the world.

The family looks forward to showing him the messages that have been streaming in from all over.

Nick Maurer, Nina’s brother, said last week that the robbers also held the couple’s children, their infant son Sebastian and six-year-old daughter Lara captive in the main bedroom.

After the robbers fled, Nina phoned to get help. The robbers fled with the couple’s cellphones, laptops and wallets.

No arrests have been made, police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said. Anyone with information can phone Constable Mkhuseli Ngqiyana at 021 658 2266.
