Cape Town – A security guard is in critical condition after four men posing as tourists robbed a curio shop in Sea Point on Tuesday morning.
The men targeted Gift House Curios, which also offers foreign currency exchange, around 08:00.
Western Cape police said one of the men had threatened the staff with a gun.
The security guard, in his forties, was shot in the hand and cheek.
He was found injured in an office at the back of the shop, said ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring.
Paramedics believe the bullet passed through his hand and entered his face.
'What can you do?'
The men made off with cash and leather boots, said Captain FC van Wyk.
Shop owner Mark Goldberg told News24 that the men stole ostrich goods and a small amount of money.
"What can you do? We are beefing up security and putting measures in place, such as looking at our opening times."
The police were investigating a case of business robbery and attempted murder.
Atlantic Seaboard residents registered their shock and dismay on Facebook at the attack "in broad daylight".
